Speaker Profiles:

Dr Nikola Stepanov, Integrity Commissioner

Dr Nikola Stepanov is the 5th Queensland Integrity Commissioner, and the first female Commissioner. During her time as Commissioner, she has also   acted as Queensland Health Ombudsman.
Dr Stepanov is an ethicist, lawyer, and mediator. She was also automatically re-registered as health practitioner due to COVID-19.
She is well recognised for her work in medical ethics and law, including as co- author of a book chapter with the founder of Evidence-Based Medicine, Professor Gordon Guyatt O.C. (Order of Canada). As well, together with international colleagues, she was interviewed by journalists from prestigious journal, ‘Nature’, and her work was featured in one of their articles.

Dr Alex Markwell, Emergency Physician

Dr Alex Markwell is an Emergency Physician at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Immediate Past Chair of the Queensland Clinical Senate. She is a Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland, member of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) Council of Advocacy, Practice and Partnerships and Past Chair of the ACEM CPD Committee.

Alex is passionate about doctors' health, wellbeing, and work-life flexibility and is founding member of Wellness Resilience and Performance in Emergency Medicine ( 

Tracy Pickett, Senior Solicitor

Tracy is a Medico-Legal Advisor and in that role is responsible for responding to member calls to Avant’s Medico-legal Advisory Service.  Tracy provides members with prompt practical responses to their medico-legal questions.  As a member of this advisory team, Tracy is kept abreast of signficant developments in the Australian medico-legal environment.

Tracy has gained extensive experience in relation to medico-legal complaint management and litigation over more than 20 years. Tracy’s significant experience was recognised by her peers in 2020 and 2021 by her listing as a Leading Queensland Defendant Medical Negligence Lawyer in the Doyle’s Guide.

Tracy has acted for the health professionals indemnified by most of the major Australian medical defence organisations, as well as Queensland Health.  As a result, she has a keen awareness of the needs of health care practitioners and seeks to provide prompt, effective and pro-active solutions to their widely varied medico-legal concerns.

Tracy is actively involved in Brisbane’s medico-legal community.  She is the immediate past president of the Medico-Legal Society of Queensland and she is a committee member for the Uniting Care Health Human Research Ethics Committee.   Tracy is also a member for the steering committee for HEAL, the Queensland Chapter of the Australasian Association of Bioethics and Health Law.  

Tracy is a former director of the Queensland Doctors’ Health Programme, and remains committed to supporting the wellbeing of health professionals in Queensland.

Covid-19 Postponement & Vaccination Requirements:

As per Qld Government guidelines, from 17 Dec 21, all event attendees must show proof of double COVID-19 vaccination on arrival at the event. To help avoid any awkwardness, please do not book if you are not vaccinated.

We will continue to monitor all current outbreaks closely. If we need to move the event due to changes in government requirements, all tickets will be automatically transferred to the new date. If you cannot make the new date you may transfer your ticket to another attendee or request a full refund.
