Each year the Society’s executive committee endeavours to design a topical program which appeals to both the legal and medical professions. The 2009 conference theme, Restraining the Black Dog: Managing Mental Health was immediately confronting. This theme involved a number of issues within our professions, and reminded us that the broader community is affected by our decisions and the opinions we proffer.  This is a very complex and emotional topic.  How do we maintain the human rights of the mentally ill without putting the public at risk?

The society’s charter to educate and encourage an open exchange of views between the professions was met by this conference program. Starting with a breakfast keynote address by Queensland’s Adult Guardian Dianne Pendergast, there was at times provocative and stimulating discussion, with both professions contributing their thoughts on this important and highly topical subject. The program concluded with a “Hypothetical” facilitated by Ralph Devlin SC - an entertaining and an appropriate finale to the day’s proceedings.

Socially, guests got together with an informal dinner on Friday evening at Club Pelican Golf Club overlooking the beautiful Greg Norman designed Club Pelican Golf Course. Our conference dinner on Saturday night provided a great opportunity to reflect on the day’s discussions.
