A,ID,&S (Alcohol, Illicit Drugs and Society) - The changing dynamics of societal attitudes to alcohol consumption and illicit drugs

Dr John Herron AO is Chairman, Australian National Council on Drugs which is the principal advisory body to the Federal Government on illicit drugs, alcohol and tobacco.  This appointment followed his four year term as Ambassador to Ireland and the Holy See. Dr Herron was a Queensland Liberal Party Senator from 1990 to 2002 and was Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs (1996–2001). Prior to entering Parliament he was a general surgeon for 30 years.  During this time he was Queensland President of the Australian Medical Association as well as state Chairman of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Association of Surgeons. He was twice President of the Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division) from 1980–1983 and 2000–2002.  He was awarded the Humanitarian Overseas Medal for his service as a Care Australia medical officer during the Rwandan crisis and was made an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2012.
